REPLICA SPACE POD (BLINKY GUNTER)

Updated: October 12, 2022

I live (Binky Gunter) in a small town of Mitchell, IN and have always been interested in science fiction and space travel. One of our local heroes was Virgil Gus Grissom, one of the NASA astronauts when manned space flight first started. I'm sure that had some influence on my interests. https://www.in.gov/.../park.../files/sp-grissom_brochure.pdf

Like most of us old sci-fi fans, I grew up watching "Lost In Space". A few years ago I was looking around on the internet and ended up at the B9 Robot Builders Club. Finding out that I could actually build the robot that I always wanted as a kid kind of reignited a flame. I spent a year researching and looking at the other members scrap books to see if I could do a scratch build without spending a fortune. Decided to start the project and worked on it for about 5 years. I figure it is about 70% done now. Needing a place to store some parts till I get around to installing them into the robot, I decided I needed a small storage shed. That's where the robot went on hold and the pod came in. I had seen blue prints online for the original space pod and had bought a 1:24 scale model for reference. About December of 2019 I started building some of the external parts of the Pod. After getting almost all of the external parts finished or at least started, I began working on the frame and body. Hoping to finish it up before the snow flies, but as you can tell from the picture I've still got a few parts to finish. (2 thrusters, 2 external tanks and the rear pod door)

I figured if I was going to build a yard barn it might as well look cool. All of the lights work and are connected to a motion detector so that every time a vehicle drives past at night, the light show begins and stays on for about 10 minutes. Now every time I pull into my driveway, I am momentarily taken back to my childhood. I just hope that it brings a bit of entertainment, excitement, amazement or fond memories to all that drive by.
