Space Ghost is a superhero created by Hanna-Barbera Productions, designed by Alex Toth for the animated series of the same name. In his original incarnation, he was an intergalactic crime fighter from the Ghost Planet, possessing the ability to become invisible, fly, and survive in space. His principal weapons were his power bands, which generated beam based attacks including heat, cold, magnetism, energy, and force.
Space Ghost was brought back as a host for his own fictional late night talk show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, in the 1990s. This version of Space Ghost, known for his dim witted behavior and use of non sequiturs, served as a mascot for Cartoon Network. In the 2000s, he was revamped as a serious superhero in a mini-series by DC Comics.
The character and eponymous series originated from the desire of CBS daytime programming head Fred Silverman to incorporate classic superhero iconography with the Space Age. The original series debuted in September 1966, and Space Ghost was voiced by Gary Owens, best known for his role as the announcer for Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In.
Space Ghosts costume has remained consistent across all adaptations, featuring a white bodysuit with a wispy yellow cape, a black mask connecting to a red and black emblem, power bands, and a power belt. His appearance under the mask varies, with concept art by Alex Toth for the original series and a more muscular appearance in the 2005 miniseries.
The character has been featured in various media, including a full episodes YouTube playlist, showcasing the original 1966 Space Ghost series.
Space Ghosts legacy continues through his appearances in comics, such as the Guardian of the Spaceways series, which returns for more evil thwarting action.
