PLANET OF THE APES ORIGINAL HERO GORILLA DISPLAY |
Updated: April 19, 2026
A hero gorilla costume and make-up display from the Planet of the Apes film and TV franchise, in which intelligent apes clashed with humans in a bid for control as the dominant species.
Sympathetically restored and presented on a custom display, this costume was originally provided by Brian Penikas, a makeup and special effects artist and member of Planet of the Apes re-enactment troupe APEMANIA, who also created the head, replica holster and holster belt present on the display. Neither Penikas nor the APEMANIA team were involved in the construction of the mannequin display.
The gorilla's costume consists of a purple leather jacket, a pair of purple leather gloves, a pair of black leather boots and a pair of purple trousers. It also includes a leather belt that features two leather pouches and a holster, which contains a resin and metal pistol, finished to look wooden. The pistol is a production original.
This particular gorilla appeared in three films ( Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Battle for the Planet of the Apes ), as evidenced by a Western Costume Company label in the trousers, bearing the production number "2954-3". Following its use in the films, it was then altered, with the silver 'V' detail on the jacket, for the Planet of the Apes television show.
Value: $10,000.
