ORIGINAL THE MAN FROM THE 25TH CENTURY PAINTING

Updated: July 11, 2023

Ultra rare, original, very large, overall 28" x 37" ( inner art dimension 24 1/2" x 33" ) painting on white illustration board of production art for the mid-1960's ( the line on the bottom left reads "1966 Irwin Allen Productions – 20th Century Fox" ) proposed science fiction television series, "The Man From the 25th Century", the pilot of this unsold series ( originally meant to be a spin-off of "Lost in Space" until that idea was scrapped ) written and produced by Irwin Allen ( TV's "Lost in Space"; "Time Tunnel"; "Land of the Giants" plus the feature films "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno" ) with a 10-minute presentation film depicting the basic premise of the series.

This incredibly rare, one-of-a-kind original art piece was initially gifted to "Famous Monsters of Filmland" editor, Forrest J. Ackerman, a.k.a. "Mr. Sci-Fi", by Irwin Allen and was acquired for the Ronald V. Borst Collection in the May, 1993, Arlington, Virginia 35th Anniversary "Famous Monsters of Filmland" Convention / Auction. The artwork was matted to the image and framed when on display in the Ackermansion but was unframed when sold in auction revealing the overall condition to be good / very good with virtually all the significant wear on the non-art white borders, edges and reverse side. There is one about ¾" triangular shaped surface mar with an about 1" light scratch on the bottom left ( left of the futuristic landing pad, just opposite the tower in the far distance for closer view see our photo of the lower left corner area ). Meant to be displayed on a light box, the viewing ports on the Jupiter-2 style space ship plus a number of small holes on the tops of docked ships, the tip of the distant signal tower, the forefront disc rim and nearly 3 dozen stars ) were creatively cut out and backed by colored gels placed on the reverse side so that when back lit it would give the 3D appearance of space ship lights and a star field for an incredible visual presentation. Our photos also show the crudely taped but effective colored gels positioned on the back of the art work ( some gels have flaked / fallen off ).

Value: $3,500.
